Brought to you by Team More Techie Than You
as part of Michigan State University's Master of Arts in Education Technology (MAET)
Misconceptions exist everywhere. Everyone knows everything, right? Misconceptions can be problematic, especially in education and learning. Misconceptions in student understanding can cause immeasurable issues and problems when students begin to apply their basic facts and information to new contextual situations. Research documents that prior knowledge plays a principal role in learning. What the learner already knows, gaps in knowledge, and misconceptions all influence the understanding of new information ready to be digested.
In an effort to understand understanding and the role of misconceptions in education, team More Techie Than You designed an experiment to observe the misconceptions about the color of the ocean held by a sample population. The experiment was conducted via the interview process and the responses were then observed and analyzed. More Techie Than You looked for patterns among its interview participants to note the similarities and differences noted as the subjects were probed with questions about their understanding of the color of the ocean.
Water. The basic necessity of every life form. How much do we really know about it? Can we answer the basic question about its color? Do you know the color of the ocean water? The individual perception of the color of the ocean presents a plethora of answers, which More Techie Than You attempted in their exploration about misconceptions in understanding and its effect on learning.
